...Fresh lemon on the fridge and a chance to win.

Good morning and yes, I did have to alter the zing of this photo, just a smidgeon! I made some fridge magnets with the new My Heart Dies and some of the sticky backed magnetic sheets that we have at the store. Since the fridge here is way down at the back of the kitchen away from the window I just had to lighten and brighten the pic just a wee tiny bit.

I cut out some fancy glitter card stock that has been lying around, I love the fresh lemon shade - I cut out a few hearts in a complimentary patterned paper also (think this was a Cosmo Cricket paper). Next I ran some of the Magnetic sheets through the old Grand Calibur with the dies and I was absolutely stunned that it worked.

If you have purchased any of our sheets you will see that they are quite thick. Very thick. I was sort of bracing myself as I sent it through the Calibur, just in case the whole thing would jam, but nope, it went through, clean as a whistle and it cut on the first pass. Handily, the magnet cut all the way through but stopped short of the waxed backing paper, so it was easy to remove the shapes from the sheet. Hurrah!

For shapes like the heart which are symmetrical, it does not matter what side you cut the paper/magnet from, but for the arrow heart, I needed to flip the magnet over and cut the die from the other side, so the that the paper version would stick to the magnet version in the correct way.

For me this represents a last moment attempt at some thing vaguely Valentinesy, but still unmushy. I am still at home with sick child and so all the last moment plans to nip out and pick something up have fallen apart, my kids have a knack of falling ill when it's an anniversary, birthday, Valentines...you name it. For the last 14 years, any event in our house that has had a whiff of romance about it has been accompanied by pimples and a temperature....

But I'll bet you are all set, dozen roses cooling in a bucket in the garage, chocolates in behind the books in the book case, card all prepared and written etc, yep? So, let's hear all about it - tell me your plans for Valentines, leave me a comment on this post - I will pick a winner (at random) tomorrow night at midnight, 'cos I will still be up, administering calpol to somebody somewhere....

The random winner will win a set of WMS Cutting Edge dies!

For my little notes I used Compact sentiments Part two. Gooey, but not mushy.

Don't forget to leave your comments below for a chance to win!

  1. These are gorgeous Claire, I can't believe the magnet sheets die cut so well, I have been too afraid to try cutting mine! I hope the sick kido gets better soon for you also. I think my plans will involve using the day as an excuse to make something bad for the waist line for a fancy dinner at home :D

  2. No Valentines is a very last minute thing in my house too as my hubby usually games with his mates on a Friday so I wasn't expecting him home. Quick dash to M&S this lunchtime for some "nice" food is as romantic as I'm getting.....
Love the heart magnets though - I had no idea you could diecut magnetic sheets - need to have a go!

  3. Very cute magnets. Since the very first time I celebrated Valentine's Day with the hubby, he has made dinner of chicken Marsala and risotto. It's the one day a year he makes dinner. He hasn't yet asked if we have chicken, so I'm not sure what is going to happen.

  4. Love the magnets - would never think to cut something like this with my Grand Calibur! Valentine's Day is one of those holidays that ebbs and flows depending on what is happening in our lives. My DH is definately the more inventive one but this year with work commitments, a doctor's appt, and the weather it will be a quiet dinner together.

  5. The extent of my Valentine's Day is a bag of Hershey's Kisses! I'm working early that day, and have no plans at all!

  6. Love your sunny heart magnets! I will try some thinner sheets in my CB first, but I see magnets in my future. TFS
Valentine's Day always involves chocolate here. ;-)

  9. My daughter and I both have the day off (hubby has to work all day), so we decided to plan and make a nice valentines dinner at home. We will be setting up the table for 3 (hubby, daughter and me) with cute home made decorations and baking some red velvet heart shaped cupcakes! As a surprise I made them special cards for each of them that tells them the reason I love them :)
It's the first year doing something like this, so let's hope I don't burn anything!! lol it tends to happen when I'm under pressure! Ha!

  10. We don't make a big deal of Valentine's Day. I think the last time we tried to go out was B.C. (Before Children) and all the restaurants were jammed with long waits. Most unpleasant. So, I have love notes and stuffed animals for the kids, plan to pick up a heart shaped take-and-bake pizza and then will snuggle in on the couch and watch Despicable Me 2. Much better than trying to find something nice to wear that fits and waiting endlessly for a table. Happy Valentine's Day!

  11. Your magnets are so cheerful! I haven't tried cutting anything other than card in my Grand Calibur yet, but might give it a go now.
I always start out with good intentions for Valentines day - in fact I bought some pretty organza ribbon with hearts on especially to make DH's card this year. However I've run out of time again and ended up buying him a card and his favourite fishing magazine when I was on my way home from the Job Centre this morning. Yesterday was spent looking after our 2 year old grandson who has tonsilitis (yet more Calpol) and this afternoon and evening will be spent completing job applications, so I wouldn't have had time to make him anything this year.
I hope that your little one gets better soon.

  12. Oh I wish I was half as organised as you Claire - and I've just had a week off work so no excuses!
I have no fixed plans for hubby (he's not fussed either way)but hey, maybe I'll take a leaf out of your book and stick a great big note on our fridge LOL!

  13. This magnets are so fresh - perfect for the fridge.
I planed to have a Valentine-dinner with my hubby, but now I will be on a funeral(my friends mum died) - so we will have a spontaneous Valentineday in the next days.

  14. Hope your family is feeling better soon! No Valentine plans yet for me. Hubby keeps telling me to pick a place and make reservations for dinner, but I haven't yet. I'm having a couple hours of medical tests done earlier in the day (it was the first time available), and don't really know how I'll feel afterwards. Thanks for the chance to win!

  15. Love the fridge magnets! We will be having a special meal, with a nice bottle of wine. My husband is going yo make my favourite cookies for me -- Death By Chocolate cookies! I have to ration myself because all the caffeine and sugar really buzz me out!

  17. Well, I was planning on sending the girls to school with their Valentines goodies and then the whole family was going to go out for dinner, but with the snow we're getting, I'm thinking there will be no snow tomorrow, and perhaps we'll be eating at home as well.....it's going to be a play it by ear kind of day!

  18. My Valentine's Day will consist of dance competition all weekend! My hubby did send me some chocolate covered strawberries though . . . very yummy!

  20. I wouldn't have thought to cut magnet sheets! Love your magnets! Dear hubby isn't feeling well so Valentine's will be postponed til he is better.

  21. Your magnets are fabulous!! DH and I have a babysitter on Saturday night so we're going out to dinner at one of our fave places. Friday is actually also our 10th wedding anniversary so this year is really special!

  22. We aren't doing anything special for valentine's day - the fact that hubby is home this year and not deployed and we can spend the evening together with our little furbaby is all the present I need! Thanks for the chance to win Claire!

  23. How cool that the dies cut magnetic sheets so easily, Claire ... and how cool are these fridge magnets! I'll be spending the day making shutters!

  24. I adore the magnets! What an excellent idea. I'm kinda bummed that my newish fridge (stainless) will not hold magnets - I have to resort to a tiny magnet board inside of a cupboard.

Valentine's Day...well firstly, my husband is actually going to be at home AND it's a Friday! His job has a uncanny knack of sending him off traveling on Valentine's Day, our anniversary and my birthday. We don't do presents or chocolates, though he did present me a bag of Garrett Popcorn (the cheese corn, caramel corn mix) this morning, so that started things off. He picked it up at the airport last night after he landed (they have a shop at the airport). Garrett popcorn - a definite must-bye if you are ever flying through Chicago O'Hare airport or visiting Chicago proper. Anyway, we have plans to go out to dinner at our favorite Argentinian restaurant - they have great tapas and Sangria. And then home for dessert - I have plans to make him his favorite Peppermint Dark Chocolate cake. And there will probably be champagne involved. I've also made him two cards - one cute, one more romantic. So all in all, we've got it goin' on this year. :)

  25. hahahaha! I am laughing coz I have nothing done for Valentine's tomorrow..... am I awful or what? More focused on the mid term break next week and enjoying time together as a family. I am sure my hubby will go "shopping" in my box of cards later for a card for me! then again.. my Christmas present arrived today ... a new imac! Doing the happy dance!!!!! I emailed you... I owe you some bobs!

  26. I love your magnets! I've never tried die cutting magnetic paper, but I love the result. :)

I ended up buying some chocolates this year. I did make a card though - several in fact, so my husband got to choose the one I'll be giving him.

  29. Love your magnets! So cheery! Valentine's dinner will be so romantic this year! We will be having whatever is convenient in a bag from the freezer while watching Wheel of Fortune! Hey it's Valentines week on the Wheel - that counts doesn't it? I did make my hubbie 3 cute Valentines cards and I crafted with the grandkids and they made cards for their parents!

  30. I am afraid any Valentine's plans will be last minute. It has been a busy week and I need to visit my mom tomorrow--she is in a nursing home. I will try to come up with a special dinner and dessert. I do have some Hershey kisses somewhere. It is also my granddaughter's birthday. I have the present wrapped but need to make a card.

  33. Fab project! My family raided my supplies and have made cards for each other which we'll swap over dinner. Explaining to a five year old that he had to spray the mister in a box was tough as he tried to spray the walls :)

  34. No plans ...we went out last night and the night before . with the temperatures reaching 85° today,in CA I think we will barbecue out by the pool crazy .....for February
Love your fun yellow magnets.....looks like a good hold too.

  35. We recently moved as we are building a new house and I do not have access to my card making materials yet (soon, though) so there is no hand-made card from me or anything else as I do not really even have a kitchen yet. However, I did run out to get a huge box of chocolate chip cookies which are DH absolute fav. Love the hearts magnets. Too cute. Cheers.

  36. Great zingy fridge magnets...love lemon zesty stuff anyhow...like lemon drizzle cake and lemon meringue...etc...you get my drift....sorry little one is poorly - bang on time for the half term holiday too....wouldn't you know it!
My DH doesn't do mush either and we spent a while in Dungannon Minor Injuries Unit having him x-rayed but thankful there are no breakages....just wants a lot of tlc - but no cards are exchanged.....the only Valentine thing I've done is write out a poem a young lad wrote for his girl friend...would love to have seen her face when she read it....Hope litle one improves and should, by any chance, the weather change overnight, which I fear it won't, then you just may get out of the door sometime over the next week but Lisburn is notorious for being far worse weather wise than where I am....was to be there on Wednesday but given the snow refusted to leave the house.

I know what its like for the kids to get sick, mine try and save it for christmas!!!
We were planning to go and visit family for valentines not romantic I know, but all these storms have put paid to that. Off to make some surprise treats for little boys and husband

  39. One of our kiddos always ends up sick too :) We had family dinner plans made by me -- prime rib, shrimp scampi, roasted artichokes and chocolate cake with orange creme anglaise -- by the hubby got his truck stuck in town and didn't make it home til later. And we did have a puker later in the evening as well!

  40. As a singleton I don't have any romantic plans, but a group of girlfriends are getting together for a stamping night! We'll get take-out and eat dinner together that no one had to cook, and then get down to crafty good fun.

  41. I love this sweet project, Claire! Magnets are fun. Bless You for making your simple dies equal of both sides. I think all die companies should, I'm baffled by it when I'm making special projects that are not cards.
