...Halloween is coming

It was during the last days of Second World War. She had been evacuated from home in Belfast to a little seaside town in South County Down. A picturesque little spot overlooking Carlingford Lough and the Cooley mountains. At 6 and a half years of age, Mary was sent with many, many other Belfast children to the homes of people far away from the bombing and the blitz in Belfast.

Most folks were very kind to the children and old Mrs Bradley was no exception, she found a room for Mary in the far end of her little long cottage. Tucked away in the room behind the huge hearth, Mary was very comfortable. The room was empty save for an old iron bed, a three legged stool, a blackened wooden chest and a white jug and basin which sat in the enormously wide window ledge.

The cottage was old, very solid, with not a suggestion of damp and Mary's little window faced the sea. Old Mrs Bradley was a keen cook and Mary loved to help. The two became friends. Mr Bradley had 'gone to sea' a long time ago and was not asked about, Mary was not a nosey child and Mrs Bradley usually spoke enough so that Mary didn't have to ask questions. It was Mrs Bradley's manner to talk to Mary about everyone and everything as though Mary had always been with her and knew everything already.

The War drew to an end and many of the children returned home. On the morning of the day that Mary was due to leave, she and the old woman sat for a while before the fire and the old woman treated Mary to a cup of tea in her best china tea cups, retrieved from the wooden chest.

"These were a gift from the mother-in-law, when Marion was christened." said Old Mrs Bradley holding the good cream china tea cup up to Mary in a toast. "These are the last two cups I have Mary, I want you to take that one home with you and bring it again when you come to visit me, we'll drink a health to each other."

Mary looked, as she had done many times, at the image of Marion on the mantle-piece, a pretty lady with shining ringlets. Marion looked happy and Mary decided to ask "Is she sad because she broke the cups then Mrs Bradley?".

"Is who sad child? what do you mean Mary?" asked Mrs Bradley

"Well, when Marion comes into my room at night to mind me, she sits on the wee stool and looks sad. Did she break the other cups Mrs Bradley? I think it must have been an accident, I don't think she meant to..."

Old Mrs Bradley didn't miss a beat, "of course not child," she said and up she jumped from the chair and busied herself about the parcel of scones she was sending home with Mary. With a sidelong glance at the picture on the mantle, she wrapped Mary's cup in waxed loaf paper and tied up the two parcels with a length of wool. A little loop for carrying.

Out the front door of the cottage they went, arm in arm, the best of friends. Down the lane to the road, past the churchyard where they had lain flowers together and stood in silent prayer together every day that the child had been with her.

Old Mrs Bradley waved Mary off into the little throng of children, marshalled by schoolteachers, being gathered together for the journey home to Belfast. Her bond with Mary was a good one and she knew she would see her again, so she was not at all sad as she walked up the hill home, picking hedge flowers on the way.

Pushing the graveyard gate open she stepped in and knelt by the memorial stone just inside the gate.

"Now Marion, Mary is a fine child of course, a lot like you, yes, but she will never take your place my daughter...no. You'd no need to be so sad." sighed Old Mrs Bradley to the stone as she fussed the flowers into place beneath the name and the lower date, carved in large fine lettering: Marion Bradley, - 1923. "And isn't it a blessing the child can't read...".

A little Halloween story! 90% fiction, 10% true! lol. Hope it tickles!

Pics were taken at Rowallane gardens Saintfield, Ghosts trail and pumpkin day last weekend. Photoshop filters used.

...emails

Promised myself I would not post again until I had a card!!! ugh, but as usual, time makes it's own plans!!! Anyhow...just a quick note to let folks know I had to upgrade the security on the old 'puter and so I'm fully expecting that there will be folks who have emailed me and haven't had a reply this week!

I do have a ton of emails to get through, and I'm working through them (after shipping of course! lol) so I will get them answered this week, so please do bear with me on that.

If you have emailed this week, from Sunday onwards, and you do not hear from me by say, Saturday, do pop me another mail, there always seems to be a few emails that get sucked away into some mysterious cyberland when any computer changes/upgrades take place...

...big stamps

I'm just confirming some deliveries for WMS November goodies and looking at one of the stamp sets I am struck by how it contains what might be our biggest ever stamp!!! lol, got, ya thinkin'???

Anyhow, it prompts me to post a wee note to remind everyone that large stamps need to be very slowly and carefully peeled away from the carrier sheet when you first get them. All clear stamps are extra sticky when new and it's not such a big deal once you've used them once or twice but the first 'peel' should be slow...LOL

A long time ago I peeled a large Nestie Egg stamp too fast and ended up with a wee patch on the reverse that wasn't as clear as the rest of the stamp, the stamp works great, the little 'foggy' bit didn't affect performance, as the rest of the stamp was still perfectly sticky, but I'm ultra fussy and don't like little foggy bits no matter how small so I peel real slow.....

Just thought I'd 'advance warn' you for the monster stamp that's coming in November...LOL

...Soo?

ED again - and yes ladies I do love that warm glow....and I'm not ready to lose it, I use natural light as much as possible but some days here are very gray, esp in winter so we'll not be seeing the end of the brown paper just yet, I did try other things a week or two ago, but I love the brown paper background, no matter how unprofessional my DH thinks it is!! LOL!!! - And thank you all for the suggestions, I'll be working my way through what can and can't be done over the next couple of days!!! Cheers ladies!

ED - Oh yes, deets of the lightbox will be all over this blog...soon as I actually unpack it and use it...LOL, ta for asking Debby!

We're redesigning the blog as you can see, I wanted a nice clean streamlined feel... I'm hoping that we'll have larger photos of stuff that I make in future and so I wanted the design to sort of recede into the background so's the pictures would take centre stage...LOL..I also invested in a light box...so I hope to get that rigged up soon!!! Maybe get that set up at the weekend!!

I think we're getting there but I just thought I'd ask if there was anything folks specifically wanted to see on the blog.

We have a new search feature and the translation widget is still with us. We re-organised a lot of stuff into tabs at the top as you can see, but if there was something specific that a lot of folks felt was missing, now would be the time to try to add it in!! So, if you have a suggestion we'd love to hear it...my web dude is standing by... LOL,

cheers ladies and gents...(yep we have some guy visitors too, they're pretty shy, but I know they're out there!)

...In progress

Just to let you know we're doing a little work on the blog....so things might be a bit upside down for a day or two...or maybe three...lol

...TAG- You're it!! Challenge!!

ED - Good Question Mary - yup you can enter as many times as you like, but be sure to enter each tag individually, kwim? Even if you make say, three tags and write them all up in one blog post, make sure you enter 3 links in the inlinkz thingy below, that way when I'm going through, I will know to look out for each tag. AND since the random number thingy will be working on the number of entries, the more tags you enter, the better your chance of winning the overall prize!!!

When I released our October new stamps I mentioned that I was going to run a little competition, Finally, I have managed to grab 20 mins to write this post detailing the challenge!

I'm calling it the "Tag - you're it!" WMS Christmas Challenge 2010. Catchy eh?

I am offering a £100GBP voucher for the WMS store. In return I want to see beauty and elegance!! not too much to ask is it? lol. You will be able to use the voucher to purchase anything in the store, dies, stamps or digi stuff.

What I want you to do is to make a tag, any size, any shape, I want Christmas tags of course! I want you to think 'beauty' and 'elegant' I want to see lovely tags, they may be CAS or vintage, distressed, minimalist, much-ivalist, lol, any style you want, BUT there will be spot prizes for tags that me and the girlies think are particulary beautiful or elegant, I just want to see prettiness! So, gimme your best frills, your finest feathers, your most prized pearls! LOL.

You may use any stamps of your choice but be sure to read all the deets, If you are the winner, you could get extra if you use WMS on your tag!!! See below

Here's the Schedule:

• You have from now until November 6th to make a tag, photograph it and upload it to somewhere on the web so's we can all visit you and drool all over your fabby creation. You may post to blogs, galleries such as SCS, the WMS gallery, or other hosts such as Flikr or Photobucket etc, anywhere - Just as long as you can provide us with a link to find it!! It's great if we can leave comments but I know this isn't always possible.

• Once you have a link for your Tag, insert it into the Inlinkz feature at the end of this blog post, I will post a link to this post on the side of the blog so's you can find it when you come back!!

• Submissions close on Nov 6th.

• On November 7, we will announce the grand winner as part of our November release post - yup we're holding the November release on the 7th!!!!

• On November 7, we will also announce the spot prizes awarded for tags that especially tickle, me an the ladies will have a wee vote on this!! There will be 3 spot prizes, each winning a stamp set each.

The overall winner will be chosen via the random number thingy, And Here's the extra juicy bit - If your tag features WMS, you will get bonus credit to the value of £25!!!! you could stand to win £125 of WMS goodies!! (that's approx $199 US, $202 CAD, $202AUD, 143Euros!!!)

I cheated slightly today in that my tag doesn't scream Christmas but is subtly festive! LOL, but as usual I'm crafting on the run between packing orders!!

I chose to gussie up a jar candle, this was a cracking wee find in a bargain shop, a lovely jar with a handle on it!! the candle is Red Apple scented and will make a neat teachers helper gift...or maybe I'll give it to myself! lol,

I used:
Stamps: Holiday labels No.14 frame, sentiment from Nutcracker Sweet.
Ink: Versacolour, pinecone and Burgundy
Card: plain cream from a local LSS, unbranded.
Ribbon: from stash....erm...sorry
Buttons: PTI Chocolate Bown buttons
String: fine linen string, harware store
Other: Rusty Metal Star on a piece of rusty metal wire (craft fair find) and a Pinecone

Hope it tickles!

...Look! I'm waltzing!

ED - The card I use is this stuff, I have found it in UK, not sure if it's available in US, but I think these guys ship...you can get it in white or cream, it has one textured side and one fairly smooth side, it's neat stuff but quite porous, so stamping is not as crisp as it would be on say, a Gina K white or a PTI card. Ta for asking!

Good morning/afternnoon/Evening!!

I am taking part in the Friends of WMS blog waltz today, anybody can play along, you simply make a card loosely connected to this months theme of Autumn/Harvest and link it on our WMS forum so's we can pop over and see!

Here is the link thread, we also run a wee competition, you can read about it here. You do need to be registered on the forum to play, but that's only so's we can all chat about it on the forum too, and it's easy to register.

For my card today, I broke out the Teeny Trees set, I seem to have had so little time to stamp recently and I wanted something that was going to be quick!!

I love the the little linked leaf circles, and I paired them with the tallest tree trunk/branch image. I used Distress Inks and blended them on the stamp using the rock and roll tecknique, you ink up in one colour and then roll the edges of the stamp in another colour, couldn't be simpler!

Cut the tree panel out with a rectangular Spellbinders Die template. Sponged exuberantly with Shabby Shutters distress ink and cut a slightl larger mat, which I sponged with crushed olive.

My card base is a 6x4.5 inch base of cream cardstock, stamped with the diamond trellis from Pic-Nic patterns. Stamped and sponged with Antique Linen, what else? LOL.

Right! I'm going to try to get a little waltzing in today, what are you up to??

Hope it tickles!

October Friends of Waltzingmouse Stamps Blog Waltz

Lisa the Mousekeeper stepping in to say the threads are up in the Waltzingmouse Forum (Playroom:Blog Waltzes) for you to link your blog if you are joining us for the waltz on Sunday. I hope you are! We can't wait to see what you've created for the Autumn/Harvest theme this month! And if you weren't able to make a card/project for the waltz, please still do waltz along and play our game for a chance to win a stamp set of choice. We'd love to have you.

Remember, it is absolutely fine to use a gallery for your linked entry if you don't have a blog. It doesn't have to be the Waltzingmouse Stamps gallery either (although you are welcome to use that). If you can post your card somewhere on the web (such as Flikr, etc), we'll be happy to visit you!!! It's fabby if we can leave comments but no worries if that option isn't open to you. The only thing you will need is to be able to access our forum to add your link, which does require registration BUT it is quick and easy... no tricky info needed!

See you on Sunday!

...a quick heads up for Credit card folks

The store checkout system has been upgraded to accept credit cards and this has been largely successful, a lot of folks asked for it, but there is a little issue that I think folks need to be aware of, especially folks from outside N Ireland/UK where I am based.

You might know this already, but if you use a credit card to purchase goods from another country, it is almost certain that your credit card company will charge some sort of fee. They may call it a "currency exchange fee" or a "handling fee" or something of that nature.

It is something that I was aware of from personal experience, I buy a lot of stuff from the USA and my credit card company charges me for this too, it's always a little amount such as a couple of pounds/Dollars, BUT it can add up. This has only happened to me personally on credit card transactions, I have never been charged a fee of this kind when using paypal to pay for my goodies, so mostly now I use paypal, but I know this does not suit everyone.

My credit card folks are quite good in that they make it clear that it is a charge THEY levy and that it does not come from the store where I purchase my goods.

Other credit card companies may not be quite so upfront, they might suggest that it is something to do with the store you purchase from. I have even heard that they list these extra charges against the name of the store from which the purchase is made, thus, the customer thinks that the store is making an extra charge. I think that's a little sneaky of them....

This is definitely not the case for WMS. When you process through checkout at our store, you pay only the amount that you see. We do not make extra charges for any reason.

If you see an extra charge on your credit card statement it is most likely from your credit card company, and they should be able to confirm this.

I must admit I was a little taken aback to see that the credit card companies don't seem to be making it clear to folks just what this charge is, or where it goes, but please know the it is not coming from Waltzingmouse Stamps.

Many thanks for listening!!

gotta go make a tag...
